Starr Chief Eagle is an enrolled member of the Sicangu (Rosebud) Lakota Sioux Tribe. She grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota including Rapid City and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and started hoop dancing before she could walk. Since then, she has been practicing every year to perfect her techniques and skills. Starr was raised up in hoop dancing by her father Dallas Chief Eagle and continues to carry on his teachings with a combination of her own. Starr enjoys sharing her culture through art, language, dance, and song for future generations in hopes of restoring and maintaining the Lakota culture.

Lakota artist and hoop dancer, Starr Chief Eagle, recently visited St. Joseph’s Indian School. The children enjoyed interacting with someone like Starr, who grew up on the SD Pine Ridge Reservation. The workshop gave students the opportunity to embrace their Lakota culture through dance, language, art and stories in a fun, active and educational way. St. Joseph's Indian School, an apostolate of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart, partners with Native American children and families to educate for life -- mind, body, heart, and spirit. Starr Chief Eagle performs a traditional Hoop Dance, which brings about positive messages of peace, unity, balance, and healing. Starr Chief Eagle is an American Indian Culture Interpreter and Performing Artist. She is an enrolled member of the Sicangu (See-Chang-goo) Rosebud Lakota Sioux tribe, currently pursuing her Bachelors Degree in American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota Morris with some classes being taken at Oglala Lakota College. Starr specializes in the traditional art of Hoop Dancing, a very rare dance performed by many Indigenous nations all over the United States and Canada. The Hoop Dance brings about positive messages of peace, unity, balance, and healing. This is accomplished by manipulating the hoops into different designs, shapes, and creatures to tell a story.
